- Campfires: The Mystery of Flame -

by Alexina

In nature, there are very few beings that are capable of handling fire. One might even go so far as to say that civilization began with a flame, and that the histories of various ethnic groups are based on the development of the flame.

We use a flame to cook our food, and a flame to save us from cold and darkness. More importantly, the flame lights our activity at night, which allows us to maximize productivity within a given day.

In our daily life, we share our food with others through camp sharing, and it is in such settings that we learn to share ourselves spiritually with other people.
Such activities are the very essence of what fuels our life's energy and is the process in which we come to accept that we are each a part of this world.

On the other hand, flames were always thought to have mystical, powerful forces. Perhaps, it is because flames possess both the blessing to create, and conversely, the ability to destroy and take away.

We are fortunate to be around flames by often experiencing campfires. It is one of the most seemingly basic, yet mythological practices as well.

The most obvious example of this is the counter-enchant. The counter-enchant is the magical process of taking the forces of the enchantment that is binding an object and moving it back into a scroll. It is a very important tool that is frequently used in campfires.
In particular, in instances where using a campfire skill is restricted to specifically ranked individuals, fire can be the very element which leads to successfully doing a counter-enchant.

Finally, remember that the flame is with us,
even in the moment of our death.
When a person dies, a flame goes out.
And a body that's lost its flame

loses its light
as well as warmth
and in the end, remains as nothing more than dirt in the earth.

The flame is the heart,
because it is the heart that is at the center of our lifeline,
and the moment our heart goes out,
the flame goes out with it.
