- Pie Story Vol.1: All About Pies -

Everybody loves pie. But what do people really know about pie? Not nearly enough, in my opinion!
So I'm here to educate the world about pie, in three pie-tastic volumes. I'll start with how the word "pie" originated, and that'll probably make you hungry, so I'll end with a recipe showing you how to make a basic pie.
2. The Origin of Pie
There are two ideas as to where the word "pie" comes from.
The first is that it comes from...magpies!
Magpies are birds that build round nests and fill them with tasty goodies...just like a pie!
You see, pies also have round crusts filled with all sorts of tasty ingredients, so the idea is that people named pies "pie" after magpie nests. Makes sense, doesn't it?
The second idea is that the name came from shoes in ancient times. That's right. You heard me. Shoes!
At the time, shoes were called "pies," and they were shaped like rectangles.
At the time, so were pies, which is why people named the food after shoes.
I personally prefer the magpie version. Less...stinky.
3. What is a Pie?
A pie is a taste of heaven! More specifically, a pie is a baked food item with various fillings supported by one or more layers of deliciously flaky crust.
Pies served as dessert are usually filled with nuts, fruits, and/or cream, while pies served as a meal contain meat.
4. How to Bake a Pie Crust
First, mix flour, salt, and sugar and pour it through a strainer.
Mix in a few pieces of refrigerated butter with the flour.
Crack an egg in the middle of the dough and slowly mix the egg into the dough. If you knead too hard, the pie will lose its crispy texture.
Let the dough cool for about 1 hour.
Then use the rolling pin to roll out the dough into a round dish, and decorate the edges to your liking. I personally like to press the edges with a fork for a nice texture.
5. How to Bake a Pie
What comes next is simple. Since there are just too many ingredients you can use for pie filling and since Volume 2 will cover that in detail, I'll just go over the basics.
When the crust is ready, fill it with whatever ingredients you want (fruits, nuts, meat, etc.) and mix them with cream and a egg. Then, bake it.
The important thing to remember here is to bake it at a high temperature for a very short amount of time.
If you bake it at too high a temperature, the pie crust will burn. If you leave it in the oven too long, the filling might seep through the crust.
So now you know all about where pie got its name! You also learned a basic recipe, so you can get started baking yourself!
Pie is simply wonderful. It's fun and easy to make, too.
It can also be served as a delicious meal, full of healthy nutrients.
