Last Letter from Antonio

My dearest Bassanio,

My ships have sunk, my holdings are worthless, the creditors are at my throat, and Shylock has me right where he wants me. It appears that it will cost me my life to settle these debts. I wish that I could see you before I meet my end, but if that is not to be, know that the debts between us are settled. You owe me nothing, my friend. And let this letter not sway you...I would not want you to come see me unless your dear wife allowed it. If this be farewell, then I hope you and her live long, happy lives.
