1. The Purpose of the Handicraft Skill

Put simply, the Handicraft skill allows a person to craft items out of materials.

With that definition, it might sound like child's play. But to make a useful item with the Handicraft skill, you must have both a thorough understanding of the end result you want and a knowledge of the materials and their requirements. The level of knowledge and skill makes Handicrafts a worthy domain for a true artisan. It should be obvious that someone truly skilled in Handicrafts can produce higher-quality products faster and in greater number.

So you can see, advancing your expertise requires not only good, skilled hands, but a thorough understanding of the many aspects of item-making.

A person who is very proficient in the Handicraft skill has mastered the following.

The Power of Thinking

The Power of Thinking is the ability to see an object, understand its underlying principles, and create new directions, innovations, and details that improve the quality of the item. This involves not just considering how the item will turn out, but also thinking through the process for ways it can be made more efficient. To measure your own Power of Thinking, consider how well you understand the characteristics of the materials, and the steps that effect the quality of the end result.

The Power of Insight

Anyone with the Handicraft skill is constantly keeping an eye out for ways to acquire materials and considering what kinds of materials are needed to make a high-quality item. Practicing this attention is how you gain the Power of Insight. To master the Power of Insight, also consider how the materials will change the functionality of the object in everyday use.

The Power of Planning

Making items from scratch takes a lot of time and money. Planning out the value of the soon-to-be-created item and deciding where to draw the line between cost and effectiveness is the Power of Planning that one will possess when one has vast knowledge of the Handicraft skill.

The Power of Confidence

There's no confidence boost like seeing that your planning and your will to work resulted in a useful item! In this world, where many people lack the confidence to believe in themselves, the Handicraft skill allows you to develop your power and see tangible results. Every step of the way can be seen and felt, so it's considered a great way to boost self-confidence, and help you bring out the power that was within you all along.

2. What You Need for the Handicraft Skill

The first thing required to use the Handicraft skill is a Handicraft Kit.

This kit contains a knife, scissors, ruler, pliers, adhesives, drawing set, and many other tools that allow you to alter your materials to fit the need. This kit is available in your nearest general shop. Getting acclimated to your kit is the first step towards mastering Handicraft skill. It's imperative that you can look on your Handicraft Kit without fear or hesitation.

The second thing required for the Handicraft skill is a set of materials. Of course, these differ depending on the item that'll be made. The end product will depend entirely on the combination of materials that you use.

Please remember that even if you're a master of the skill, if you don't have the right set of materials to work with, then there's nothing you can do!

3. Using the Skill

After you've read this book thoroughly to develop your understanding of the Handicraft skill, just equip your Handicraft Kit, and you'll be able to select the Handicraft skill in the skill window.

Once you select the Handicraft skill, you'll see a window with slots where you can place your materials. Your next steps are as follows:
1. Lay out the materials for your item.
2. Check the expected outcome.
3. Start making the item.

This skill is easy to learn but hard to master, so you may find yourself failing to create an item altogether, or ending up with an item that falls to pieces upon your first use. Don't let yourself be discouraged by this. Just keep going!

4. What You Can Make

The list of items you can make with the Handicraft skill is truly limitless. It all depends on the combination of the materials, and how you combine them.

A good starting point is finding out how other people made certain items, and reproducing their steps, or even improving on them. You may even create previously unknown items by coming up with your own imaginative combination of materials.

Now that you've read this far, try out the tasks in the rest of the book and make some items yourself using the Handicraft skill!

5. Exercises

In the following pages I have listed 6 items that can be made using the Handicraft skill.

If you follow the given process carefully, using the items listed, you'll not only make a useful item, you'll be one step closer to becoming a master of the skill.

If you've read the rest of the book, and have your Handicraft Kit in hand, it's time to begin.

Handmade Arrow
A Handmade,
Standard Quality Arrow
for Bows

Required Materials
- 5 Pieces of Firewood
- 1 Bundle of Arrowheads

Commentary
Arrows can be purchased from a blacksmith shop or weapon shop. You may even find them dropped by defeated monsters.

However, truly great archers take care to shoot only the finest arrows. After all, without arrows, a bow is useless. Bad arrows can wear down a bow's durability, while good arrows serve as a powerful extension of a bowman's will.

That's why some of the most famous archers are known to create their own handmade arrows.

Required Materials
- 5 Pieces of Firewood
- 1 Bundle of Arrowheads

You can think of a bolt as the arrow of crossbows.

Every marathon starts with a single step forward.

...But this is a beginner's text, so you only need to make one.
